The U.K.'s National Health Service (NHS) is exploring the deployment of helper robots to alleviate the burden on hospital personnel amid a nurse shortage.
Joe Harrison at Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust said the facility is testing a helper bot from the Academy of Robotics to delegate tasks like medicine delivery.
The "Milton" robot is programmed to transport medicines on specific routes using sonar and light detection and ranging technology.
The Academy of Robotics said operational tests for the robot will begin this year, while decisions to scale up deployment across NHS and in other U.K. hospitals will be based on feedback.
