Forensic Imaging Technology Helps Virtual Autopsies Outnumber Invasive Post-Mortem Procedures

Scientists at Australia's Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine (VIFM) say forensic imaging, augmented reality (AR) headsets, and artificial intelligence (AI) could reduce the necessity for invasive autopsies.

Computed tomography (CT) scans generate the images of the corpse, while Vahid Pooryousef at Australia's Monash University has designed a prototype virtual autopsy system.

Pathologists wearing AR headsets could dissect a virtual three-dimensional projection of a body while also studying the actual body in the mortuary, as well as police or medical reports.

A CT scanner at VIFM has reduced the number of autopsies required in the state of Victoria by more than half since 2005.

VIFM's Richard Bassed thinks an AR-AI combination could further shrink the case load.
