U.K. Government Sets Up Dedicated Department for Science, Technology

In a statement, the U.K. government said the new department will "focus on positioning the U.K. at the forefront of global scientific and technological advancement."

U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced the creation of a cabinet-level Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT).

A statement from Sunak's office said, "A dedicated [DSIT] will drive the innovation that will deliver improved public services, create new and better-paid jobs, and grow the economy. Having a single department focused on turning scientific and technical innovations into practical, appliable solutions to the challenges we face will help make sure the U.K. is the most innovative economy in the world."

The DSIT's six "priority outcomes" are to increase research and development, deliver gigabit broadband, put public services at the forefront of innovation, strengthen international science and technology collaboration, deliver key legislative and regulatory reforms, and pass the Online Safety Bill.
