Georgia State University (GSU) researchers are exposing how scammers exploit dating applications to defraud victims.
The researchers compiled and reviewed data from nearly 10,000 vetted online testimonials by victims of "romance fraud."
They used data analysis software to construct a romance fraud victim database, then analyzed the testimonials to extract overarching themes, identifying the most common and successful scammer tactics.
The researchers also found common risk factors for potential targets, like little familiarity with dating apps and having suffered broken relationships.
Because scammers tend to use similar linguistic cues to fool victims, GSU's Fangzhou Wang suggested online service providers could devise algorithmic predictive tools to spot attempted romance fraud for incorporation into dating and social media sites.
