Chip for Decoding Data Transmissions Demonstrates Record-Breaking Energy Efficiency

The chip has broken the record for energy-efficient decoding, performing between 10 and 100 times better than other hardware.

This new decoder chip uses a universal decoding algorithm that MIT researchers previously developed, which can unravel any error-correcting code.

The Ordered Reliability Bits Guessing Random Additive Noise Decoding (ORBGRAND) decoder chip developed by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston University, and Ireland's Maynooth University uses a more energy-efficient technique for decoding data transmissions based on reliability information.

The chip employs a universal decoding algorithm that can crack any error-correcting code 10 to 100 times better than other hardware, using a new statistical model for sorting bits based on how likely each bit is to be an error.

The chip broke the previous efficiency record by decoding bits with maximum accuracy using only 0.76 picojoules of energy per bit.

ORBGRAND could allow mobile devices to operate with fewer chips while enhancing device performance and extending battery life.
