A pilot program at a jail in Washington, D.C., funded by an Amazon grant, gave inmates access to a course in basic cloud computing skills.

The goal was for the inmates to become certified Amazon Web Services cloud practitioners, which could pave the way for them to obtain careers in IT, business analysis, marketing, and project management.

Leonard Bishop, who has been in prison since 1994, achieved certification through the program. Bishop called the program "a game changer" that "gave people a direction, not only a job but a career."

Bishop added that the certification will help him reenter society if he's released from prison. Said Bishop, "The biggest fear is how you going to provide for yourself. I think this took away some of that fear."
