Artificial intelligence (AI) video creation technology from Synthesia was used in recent deepfakes that attempted to spread misinformation and propaganda in Venezuela.
The videos, featured avatars based on real actors and synthesized American accents promoted an alleged tourism boom in Venezuela's Caribbean islands, called claims about widespread impoverishment in the country "exaggerated," and reported a lack of government opposition among Venezuelans.
Five accounts that shared the government-aligned misinformation were suspended by YouTube.
"In Venezuela, there is a desert of information where disinformation can thrive. And now the technology is there to make convincing fake news videos," says Adrián González of the misinformation monitor Cazadores de Fake News.
