Software developer hosting service GitHub has launched a new version of its Copilot coding assistant powered by the Generative Pre-trained Transformer 4 (GPT-4) multimodal large language model.
The original GPT-3-powered Copilot operated within the developer's editor window to autocomplete lines or code sections, or to produce code based on plain language requests.
Said GitHub's Thomas Dohmke, "We're bringing Copilot into every part of the developer experience. So, not just auto completion, but it will become part of every single step of the developer life cycle."
The latest Copilot's editor environment also integrates a chatbot in development tools like VS Code and Visual Studio, allowing developers to engage with the Copilot chat interface either textually or vocally.
Dohmke said the chatbot can understand what developers type in their coding window to generate customized recommendations.
