White House Unveils Efforts to Guide Federal Research of AI

The Biden administration announced new initiatives to guide federally supported research on artificial intelligence (AI) in an effort to better understand the technology's risks and opportunities.
The programs include modifying the U.S.' strategic approach to AI research to highlight international partnerships with allies.
The White House said a report from the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Educational Technology "recognizes that AI can enable new forms of interaction between educators and students, help educators address variability in learning, increase feedback loops, and support educators," while also underscoring "the risks associated with AI—including algorithmic bias—and the importance of trust, safety, and appropriate guardrails."
The Office of Science and Technology Policy also issued a new request for public commentary on national priorities "for mitigating AI risks, protecting individuals' rights and safety, and harnessing AI to improve lives."
