The Linux Foundation's European branch has launched the RISC-V Software Ecosystem (RISE) Project, whose goal is to have collaborating software and hardware vendors expedite "the availability of software for high-performance and power-efficient RISC-V cores running high-level operating systems for a variety of market segments."
Google, Intel, MediaTek, Nvidia, Qualcomm Technologies, Red Hat, and Samsung are founding members of the project.
Intel's Mark Skarpness said expanding adoption of the RISC-V standard instruction set architecture depends on accelerating the open source software ecosystem's support for the framework, in alignment with platform standards.
The Linux Foundation Europe indicated RISE participants will commit engineers and funding to meeting software challenges that the project's steering committee will outline.
The foundation's Gabriele Columbro said, "The RISE Project is dedicated to enabling RISC-V in open source tools and libraries (like LLVM, GCC, etc.) to speed implementation and time-to-market."
