Optical-Grade Glass 3-D Printed at the Nanoscale

Engineers at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) and Germany's Karlsruhe Institute of Technology have three-dimensionally (3D)-printed nanoscale optical-grade glass at low temperature using a new technique.

The researchers applied two-photon polymerization to a liquid resin surrounding polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane molecules impregnated with glass clusters.

Adding organic molecules yielded a crosslinked pre-glass polymeric nanostructure that was air-heated to 650 degrees Celsius (1,202 degrees Fahrenheit), producing a continuous glass nanostructure.

UCI's Cameron Crock said, "For pretty much any chip that can sustain 650 degrees Celsius, it will be possible to print high-quality, clear glass micro-, and nanostructures directly on the chip."
