'AI Doctor' Predicts Hospital Readmission, Other Health Outcomes

Researchers from New York University (NYU) and technology company Nvidia invented an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm to predict patients' health outcomes based on factors like mortality risk and length of hospitalization.

The researchers trained the NYUTron large language model (LLM) on millions of clinical notes from the electronic health records of 336,000 men and women treated within the NYU Langone hospital system between January 2011 and May 2020.

Tests indicated NYUTron could predict 80% of readmissions, exceeding a standard, non-LLM algorithm's accuracy by about 5%.

NYU Langone's Eric K. Oermann said, "These results demonstrate that large language models make the development of 'smart hospitals' not only a possibility, but a reality."
