Mapping by Human Brain Project Advances Understanding of Neuroreceptor Organization

Human Brain Project scientists in Germany, France, the U.K., and the U.S. have gained new insights into the arrangement of neurotransmitter receptors in the brain through a new mapping.

The researchers analyzed the density of neuroreceptors on thin in vitro brain sections from 109 areas in the macaque cortex via autoradiography.

They mapped this data with anatomical and functional data onto a common cortical space on the cortical surface of the Yerkes19 non-human primate model.

The researchers identified "two major axes of receptor organization [that] align with two different functional systems, namely the sensory-cognitive and the external-internal cognition networks," according to Nicola Palomero-Gallagher at Germany's Forschungszentrum Jülich.
