Artist's concept of the Fastrig system deployed.

The Fastrig system consists of airfoils mounted on the deck of a ship. Autonomously operated by artificial intelligence, it can set them to the most efficient angle to the wind to provide thrust to the ship.

The U.K.'s fleet for transporting spent nuclear fuel aims to retrofit the ships with artificial intelligence (AI)-driven sails to reduce fuel costs and emissions.

Nuclear Transport Solutions looks to adapt Smart Green Shipping's Fastrig system to three specially designed vessels as part of the three-year Winds of Change project.

Fastrig utilizes airfoils mounted in sets on the deck, with one part affixed to the mast and the other hinging off the first.

The sail can autonomously orient itself to the most efficient angle to the wind to generate thrust.

The system will undergo tests on land in Scotland through March 2025; future installations will incorporate the assessments' technical and performance data.
