The Taara project, launched by Alphabet's X innovation lab in 2016, uses lasers to bring Internet access to remote and rural locations.
So far, the initiative has helped establish Internet service in 13 countries, including Australia, Kenya, and Fiji, with service planned for India, among other nations.
Taara provides a machine that beams the laser carrying the data, and telecommunications and Internet providers build out communications infrastructure using these machines.
Taara's Mahesh Krishnaswamy said, "We are trying to be one of the cheapest and the most affordable places where you would be able to get dollar per gigabyte to the end consumers."
