Three public schools in Newark, NJ, are testing an artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted teaching aid from education nonprofit Khan Academy.

The Khanmigo tutoring bot frequently leads students through the sequential steps for solving problems.

Newark Public Schools officials said they volunteered to test Khanmigo to see if it could improve students' engagement and math learning; so far, the tool has garnered mixed reviews.

The school district's Alan Usherenko said the biggest concern is that the bot is doing most of the thinking.

He added, "We want [students] to know how to tackle the problem themselves, to use their critical thinking skills."
