After September, crews will close the left lane of I-94 to widen the roadway and resurface the road. Any closures with multiple lanes will be restricted to off-peak travel times, according to MDOT. Work should be completed by late November.

Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) officials said construction has begun on what officials call the "world's most sophisticated roadway" on Interstate 94 in Wayne County.

The county will outfit a three-mile stretch of westbound I-94 with the digital infrastructure for connected and automated vehicles.

MDOT is collaborating with Washington, D.C.-based roadway technology developer/integrator Cavnue to improve road safety, congestion, and accessibility, according to MDOT officials.

MDOT's Michelle Mueller said the project "will allow us to document lessons learned, benefits, and evaluate potential business models for future deployment opportunities."
