Reinventing Utopia: Self-Created Communities for the Digital Age
The Cabin organization aims to bring the concept of a kibbutz into the broadband era.

Jon Hillis is using digital technologies to create a network of self-generating, co-living communities like Neighborhood Zero outside Austin, TX, to help decentralize government.
Hillis adopted a kibbutz-like model through the Cabin organization to transform a 50-acre parcel into a home for people with similar goals, interests, and values. People can reside in and work from the community by investing or participating in what Hillis calls "definancialized workstays" with room, board, and potential citizenship offered in exchange for labor.
The community uses blockchain to vote and verify membership. With Neighborhood Zero established, Hillis has reached out to more than 20 similar U.S.-based communities; others are trying to extend this concept from rural to urban settings.
