Robotaxis Are Making Enemies as They Go Around San Francisco

The robotaxi backlash is intensifying as self-driving vehicles begin to gain real traction in San Francisco after years of development.

Despite receiving recent approval from the California Public Utilities Commission to expand robotaxi services in San Francisco, Alphabet's Waymo and General Motors' Cruise continue to face backlash from city officials, residents, labor unions, and others over traffic and safety concerns.

City attorney David Chiu has petitioned the state to suspend the expanded fare licenses; if successful, that effort would create obstacles for other companies investing in self-driving vehicles.

Chiu's petition cites about 60 cases since April 2022 in which driverless vehicles interfered with firefighting efforts.
