Robotic transcranial magnetic stimulation in the treatment of depression: a pilot study.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive method that uses magnetic fields to target brain neurons.

Scientists in South Korea compared a custom robotic system developed for transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) coil placement to traditional manual methods in treating depression.

The researchers engineered a repetitive TMS model featuring a serial arm with a spherical mechanism to highlight safety and efficient motion around the brain.

They designed the device to stimulate the prefrontal cortex through a wider workspace, bigger payload, and better system stability.

The system regulated the robot's movements at a frequency of 1 kilohertz, with an optical tracking system running at 30 hertz.

Analysis revealed that the robotic method generated fewer errors than the manual method.
