A study led by researchers at Spain's Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia and Hospital del Mar Research Institute identified cough characteristics that can help assess the severity of COVID-19 and enable long-term monitoring of patients with COVID-19 or other respiratory diseases.
The researchers performed an acoustic analysis of smartphone recordings of coughing sounds from 70 patients with SARS-CoV-2 within the first 24 hours of their hospital admission.
Using a linear mixed model, they identified significant differences in cough sounds based on severity that could be used to categorize COVID-19 infections as mild, moderate, or severe.
Hospital del Mar Research Institute's Joaquim Gea said, "This approach can aid in the prompt identification and isolation of COVID-19 patients, thus facilitating proper medical care and the implementation of control measures."
