Dubai to Start Robotaxi Trials
Five fully autonomous electric taxis are to begin test driving on an 8km (five-mile) stretch in the upscale Jumeirah district of Dubai, U.A.E.

The U.A.E. city of Dubai will launch its first wave of robotaxis in October in a bid to reduce congestion and accidents.
General Motors subsidiary Cruise will operate five autonomous electric taxis, which will initiate test driving on an eight-kilometer (five-mile) stretch in the Jumeirah district, according to Ahmed Bahrozyan with Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). He pledged that there will be "zero compromise on safety."
RTA intends to deploy 4,000 driverless taxis by 2030.
Bahrozyan said Dubai hoped to become the first city in the Middle East to introduce robotaxis.
In April, the city passed a law to regulate autonomous vehicles, establishing benchmarks for their technical, operational, and safety aspects, as well as for their sale and purchase.
