N.Y. State Bill Would Require Background Checks to Buy 3D Printers
The legislation is designed to crack down on potential misuse of such printers to manufacture gun parts.

Legislation proposed by New York State Assemblymember Jenifer Rajkumar would require subjecting consumers to criminal history background checks before permitting them to purchase certain three-dimensional (3D) printers.
The bill would have printer vendors request checks from New York's criminal justice services, who would then alert sellers if the customer has received a felony or serious offense that would disqualify them from possessing a firearm.
The legislation comes amid concern among state officials and police about 3D printers building untraceable firearms or "ghost guns" used by criminals and known felons.
In June, the Manhattan District Attorney and state legislators unveiled a separate measure to ban production of 3D-printed guns and gun parts, as well as deeming it a "class A misdemeanor to share, sell, or distribute files containing blueprints for 3D-printed firearms components."
