An international team of researchers created an artificial intelligence (AI)-based system able to discover and verify supernovas.
Northwestern University's Adam Miller said, "For the first time ever, a series of robots and AI algorithms has observed, then identified, then communicated with another telescope to finally confirm the discovery of a supernova."
The researchers said the Bright Transient Survey Bot (BTSbot) identified the candidate object SN2023tyk as a supernova on Oct. 5, then requested additional information from the Palomar Observatory in California.
The SED Machine telescope collected data on the object's spectrum, which a California Institute of Technology-based algorithm analyzed to classify the object as a Type 1a supernova.
Northwestern's Nabeel Rehemtulla said BTSbot significantly "streamlines large studies of supernovas."
