Researchers at the U.K.'s University of Sussex have demonstrated a lower-power method for transmitting data at close range while maintaining high throughput using electric, rather than electromagnetic, waves.
The method could pave the way for a replacement for Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and 5G, which rely on battery-hungry electromagnetic modulation.
Electric field modulation uses short-range electric waves, offering a more efficient way to connect devices that consumes significantly less power than Bluetooth and allows for longer battery life.
University of Sussex's Daniel Roggen said, "The technology is also low-cost, meaning it could be rolled out to society quickly and easily."
