The New York Times Hires First Newsroom Leader Focused on AI

The New York Times has begun allowing newsroom staff to apply for the opportunity to experiment with AI tools.

The New York Times said Quartz co-founder Zach Seward has been hired to develop principles for "how we do and do not use generative AI."

Seward will establish a team to try out AI tools and prototypes and assist in creating AI training programs for journalists.

Sources said an August meeting of about 50 newsroom employees focused on how the Times could use AI to improve efficiency, such as in producing headline ideas or parsing data.
