Google Search Technique Used by Police Draws Legal Challenge

The organizations advocating for civil liberties advocates argued that a keyword search warrant is dangerously broad and threatens to infringe on the privacy rights of innocent people.

Activists are challenging law enforcement's use of Google search data in solving criminal cases.

In a Jan. 5 court filing, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), along with the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and its Pennsylvania chapter, argued that keyboard search warrants are overly broad and infringe on innocent people's privacy rights.

Concerns also have been raised about geofence warrants, in which law enforcement requests data from Google about devices present near a crime scene.
