Hochul Proposes NY AI Research Center Using $275 Million in State Funds

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, in a State of the State address on Jan. 9, proposed a consortium that would position the state as a leader in AI development.
Hochul called for $275 million in state funds to be used to build an AI research center in upstate New York that would be used by public and private researchers.
This Empire AI project would receiving funding from Columbia University, Cornell University, New York University, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, each contributing $25 million.
Additional funding would come from billionaire Thomas Secunda and the Simons Foundation, with the latter's affiliated research center, the Flatiron Institute, to be a partner in the initiative.
