Columbia University researchers developed a new microscopy technique and algorithm to analyze the amount of nanoplastics in one-liter bottles of water.
This was the first study to evaluate bottled water for plastic particles smaller than 1 micrometer in length.
An analysis of 25 one-liter bottles from three popular U.S. brands revealed an average of 240,000 plastic fragments per one-liter bottle.
Nanoplastics accounted for 90% of the plastic particles.
