Purdue University researchers have developed a system that enables meta-optical devices to perform thermal imaging and accurately identify the objects and materials being imaged.

The system, which can be used with a traditional thermal camera, combines meta-optical devices and computational imaging algorithms.

In tests in which the word "Purdue" was written with different materials that interact differently with heat, the system was determined to be three times more accurate than traditional thermal imaging methods in classifying the materials.
