Researchers at Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) created a detailed database of marine microbe information.

The researchers used the KAUST Metagenomic Analysis Platform to examine DNA sequences from 2,102 ocean samples, identifying 317.5 million gene groups, more than 50% of which are categorized by organism type and gene function.

The resulting KMAP Ocean Gene Catalog 1.0 is intended to improve the understanding of ocean diversity, with details about the microbes' biological functions, geographic locations, and habitats.
