Researchers led by Ruth Filik at the U.K.'s University of Nottingham found that emojis mean different things to different people, depending on the viewer's age, gender, and nationality.
The researchers enlisted 253 Chinese people and 270 British people aged between 18 and 84, about equally split between men and women, and showed them 24 emojis that represented one of six emotions.
Each participant then assigned the emojis to the emotion that they thought was the best match.
