Openvibe: French Software Program Enables 'action Through Thought'
French research agencies have perfected a brain-computer interface four years after launching the OpenViBE project. INRIA, the French national institute for research in computer science and control, and Inserm, the French national institute of health and medical research, say the program enables users to operate a computer with just their thoughts. Researchers at Inserm and INRIA have used the technology to develop three prototypes involving virtual reality and video games. Wearing helmets equipped with electrodes, users are able to pilot a spaceship, play handball, or move around in a virtual world in the video games. Another application is a prototype of a communications aid that enables people with limited mobility to "type" whatever they are thinking.
The researchers say the OpenViBE project could contribute to new developments in signal processing, optimizing man-machine Interfaces, treating certain neurological disorders, and understanding how the brain works.
