Canadian Program Woos India's Brightest

Some of the sharpest young minds from India have taken up residence at British Columbia universities as part of an unusual program intended to woo international students and boost Canada's reputation as an education destination. The 17 students, from the elite Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT), will spend three months working on mathematical sciences and economic research alongside select professors at the University of B.C., Simon Fraser University and the University of Victoria.
The Globalink program that brought the students here for an all-expenses-paid internship nurses a big hope: that some of them will fall in love with the West Coast enough to call it home, eventually. The program was developed at the behest of Premier Gordon Campbell who asked MITACS — a national research network that encourages the growth of the knowledge-based economy — to find new ways of developing research-and-development links with India.
