Google's Global Policy Head Said to Join Obama Administration

Andrew McLaughlin is leaving his post as head of Google's global public policy division to become deputy technology officer for the Obama administration. McLaughlin, who worked from 1999 to 2002 to help found ICANN, was Google's first public policy executive. In his new position, McLaughlin will be working with Obama's chief technology officer, Aneesh Chopra, the former Virginia secretary of technology.
McLaughlin's new position highlights the connections between Google and the Obama administration; Google CEO Eric Schmidt is part of Obama's council of advisers on science and technology. McLaughlin, who also is an emeritus fellow at the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard Law School, worked at Google to promote the company's position on copyrights, online privacy, and net neutrality. At the Berkman Center he worked on regulation of the Internet and telecommunications networks as well as on projects to expand Internet use in developing countries in the Middle East and Africa.
