Researchers Receive $1.2 Million Muri Grant

The U.S. Army Research Office has awarded Pennsylvania State University (PSU) researchers pursuing work on hard/soft data fusion with a $1.2 million Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) Award. A collaborative grant, the MURI Award will support "unified research on network-based hard/soft information fusion." "The idea is that humans act not only as the users of traditional sensor data but they participate by being observers," says PSU professor David Hall. "Everyone is using cell phones and posting things on social networking sites, so they all have the potential to act as data collectors and soft sensors."
Hall's team will work interactively with researchers from the University of Buffalo on cooperative research, prototype algorithms and demonstration software, new research concepts, technical exchanges, and technical reports. The grant is spread out over three years, and can be renewed for two more years.
