Researchers to Develop Reliable Low-Power Computing Systems
The U.K. government has awarded researchers from the University of Southampton's School of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS) a grant to develop better methods for testing low-power computing systems. The goal is to improve the reliability of low-power computing systems that are embedded in mobile devices such as mobile phones, personal digital assistants, and iPods.
"If we use existing methods to identify defective integrated systems after manufacturing, without considering the systems operating voltages and semiconductor manufacturing process variation, defects will be missed by the test leading to less reliable products," says professor Bashir Al-Hashimi, co-director of the Pervasive Systems Center at ECS. "This funding is timely as I believe our research findings will make a major contribution to this new research area of voltage and process variation-aware test technology."
Al-Hashimi heads the project team, which is working in conjunction with Synopsys in the United States and Britain's ARM. Work will begin next year and end in 2012.
