Researcher Will Measure Large-Scale Data Crunching and Computer Storage Outsourcing

Wayne State University Assistant Professor Song Jiang will use a $400,000 award from the National Science Foundation to quantify Quality of Service.

The National Science Foundation has awarded Wayne State University professor Song Jiang with a Faculty Early Career Development Program award to develop a method that will make the outsourcing of data processing and storage more efficient and cost-effective. Jiang will use the $400,000 award to develop technology for quantifying Quality of Service (QoS), or the guaranteed level of performance in data flow. A parameter for hard disk input/output QoS is needed to determine the price for service.

"Hard disks are mechanical, and the information on them is stored much like a record," says Jiang, adding that the time it takes to locate the information can vary due to data access patterns. "This inconsistency makes it difficult for companies that outsource their data storage and processing services to specify service quality and set a rate for services."

Jiang plans to implement a consolidated storage service based on a reference storage device, which can be the user's own system, to guarantee QoS. Yahoo, the Performance and Architecture Laboratory at Los Alamos National Laboratory, and Seagate Research will provide technical support.
