IBM Japan Ltd. is accelerating the proliferation of cloud computing at universities as part of a global strategy by parent company IBM Corp. aimed at attracting engineers and students as future customers. On Monday (Sept. 7), the company announced that it has set up a cloud computing center at the Tokyo University of Technology, complete with blade servers and management software. Students in the university's computer science department will be able to take advantage of programming lectures at the center to learn the design, construction and administration of cloud computing services.

In addition to providing technology support, IBM Japan will conduct joint research at the center aimed at increasing software efficiency. Lectures are being given on a trial basis, with plans to formally start them from October and expand them next fiscal year.
