Researchers at the U.S. Navy Research Laboratory's (NRL) Navy Center for Applied Research in Artificial Intelligence won two awards at the 21st International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence. The competition honors videos documenting artificial intelligence (AI) innovations in research, education, and application.

The NRL team won the "Best Overall" and "Most Informative" awards for "Casey's Quest: Transfer Learning for Adversarial Environments" and "Robot Secrets Revealed, Episode 001," respectively.

"Casey's Quest" details research that NRL researchers carried out on the subject of transfer learning, in which the software first learns the intent of an adversary in a multi-agent simulation game and then applies this experience to assist in manipulating friendly agents. For the Navy, this advancement could facilitate more realistic training scenarios for various mission tasks and create a more intelligent adversary in training simulators involving semi-automated forces.

"Robot Secrets Revealed," focuses on recent gesture recognition work and NRL's ACT-R/E cognitive architecture. Among the Navy-relevant issues spotlighted by the film are computational cognitive architecture permitting autonomous function and combining perceptual data with higher level cognitive reasoning, gesture recognition for shoulder-to-shoulder, human-machine interaction, and anticipation and learning on a robotic system.
