Alliance Aims to Provide Mashup Interoperability
Eleven information technology companies are forming the Open Mashup Alliance (OMA) to promote and support the Enterprise Mashup Markup Language (EMML), which members hope will become a new standard for the industry.
EMML took more than three years to develop. "We're working together to extend and innovate on the language," says John Crupi of OMA member JackBe. Mashup expert Mike Ogrinz says a universal mashup language standard is essential for enterprise adoption. OMA founder and Kapow Technologies CEO Stefan Andreasen agrees, and notes that the need for a universal language has slowed down mashup growth.
Nevertheless, IDC analyst Kathy Quirk says mashups are increasingly being used by professional developers, and its services will only grow with time. Quirk says that mashups "hold the promise of widening access to enterprise data by freeing it from the application in which it's stored." Andreasen says EMML will also work well EC2, Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud Web service.
