New Wi-Fi Spec Challenges Bluetooth
The Wi-Fi Alliance has announced Wi-Fi Direct, a new Wi-Fi specification that supports standard Wi-Fi data rates and enables Wi-Fi-enabled devices within about 100 meters of each other to connect. Wi-Fi Direct allows any phone, camera, printer, computer, keyboard, and headphone that has built-in Wi-Fi capabilities to use wireless broadband. Wi-Fi-enabled devices would become mini Wi-Fi access points, which could eliminate the need for home Wi-Fi routers.
The Wi-Fi Alliance says the new specification will support high-speed wireless connections over short distances between other devices, just like Bluetooth technology. The technology makes it easier for devices to connect directly to each other using Wi-Fi.
The Wi-Fi Alliance hopes to publish the peer-to-peer Wi-Fi specification soon, and plans to begin certifying devices for Wi-Fi Direct in 2010.
