The research and development of "green" nanoscale devices with ultra-low power leakage is the focus of a new collaboration between the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) and the Institute of Microelectronics (IME) in Singapore. Lowering leakage power consumption is key for future electronic products in which increasing energy efficiency means increasing battery life, says UCSB professor Kaustav Banerjee.
Researchers at UCSB and IME will develop novel electronic devices with switching behavior that can move from between on and off states almost instantly. "We will be exploring new materials, transistor structures, fabrication techniques, circuits, and architectures to achieve these goals," says IME's Navab Singh. "We expect that the synergies in this collaboration will yield exciting discoveries that will have significant implications for the worldwide semiconductor and electronics industries," says IME's Patrick Lo Guo-Qiang.
