Naval Academy to Emphasize Cybersecurity
The Navy and Marine Corps have not made cybersecurity as big an issue as other branches of the military, says Naval Academy Superintendent Vice Adm. Jeffrey Fowler.

Looking at the next great threat to the nation, U.S. Naval Academy officials told the institution's oversight board Monday (December 7) that they plan to make cybersecurity a required field of study for all midshipmen. Academy Superintendent Vice Adm. Jeffrey Fowler told the Board of Visitors that cyberspace will be the next battleground. His announcement met with instant approval.
Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger (D- MD) said Russia and China already pose great cyber threats to the United States. "We as a country are not where we should be" in the field, said Ruppersberger. "This is where the future is going to be. . . . This [curriculum change] is something that has to happen."
Academic Dean and Provost Andrew T. Phillips said the academy will be designing the new curriculum in the coming year, and all midshipmen may be required to take at least a "core course" in cybersecurity as soon as 2011.
