The Welsh Department for Business, Innovation & Skills (BIS) has announced HPC Wales, a new high-performance computing (HPC) institute that will provide the industrial community with access to supercomputing resources. The project will be divided between Cardiff and Swansea universities with no centralized site, according to a BIS spokesperson. Cardiff and Swansea will provide the technology and skills base to support research and development projects.

Wales HPC also will offer skills development activities, ranging from individual workshops to Masters-level courses. BIS anticipates HPC Wales will create more than 400 new jobs, most of which will be in highly skilled technical and scientific fields such as animation, three-dimensional visualization, image processing, simulations, and data mining. HPC Wales also will provide short-term internships that will create stronger links between the institute and the industrial community and support two-way knowledge transfer.
