Software Ensures Translation Accuracy

New software developed by researchers in Malaysia has yielded promising results for translating English into Arabic. The Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia team used a set of grammatical rules to correct word agreement and to order words for the English-Arabic Rule-based Machine Translation System (English-Arabic RBMT). The researchers say the grammar-based approach is flexible and scalable.

"The main advantages of the approach are, first, it is a rule-based approach, and second, it can be applied on some other languages with minor modifications," says Tengku Mohd Tengku Sembok, head of the team. English-Arabic RBMT uses a database that is flexible, as most rules are defined in the database tables to generalize the algorithm. "A major design goal of this system is that it can be used as a standalone tool as well as is capable of being integrated with any general machine translation system," Sembok says.
