MSU Pushing Robot Development

Robots "relieve us humans from doing certain jobs that are repetitive, boring or dangerous," says Xiaobo Tan, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at Michigan State University.

Michigan State University (MSU) researchers are developing robots that can climb walls, detect breast cancer and test protective clothing worn by soldiers. They also are developing robots that look like fish, those that look like Elvis Presley, and those with applications ranging from medical to manufacturing, says MSU engineering dean Satish Udpa.

The future of robotics could involve robots that can behave like humans, and those that can communicate autonomously among themselves, says MSU professor Xiaobo Tan.

"Robotics have been an area of interest to us for a long, long time," Udpa says. "It's an important area that has had an impact on just about every discipline — we talk about medicine, talk about manufacturing, defense — whatever the area is, robotics play a very important role."
