India's International Patent Filing Dips By 29 Percent
The economic slowdown has had an impact on India's international patent filings under World Intellectual Property Organisation's (WIPO) Patent Cooperation Treaty. Provisional data released by WIPO indicates India's patent application filings in 2009 dropped 29 percent to 761, against 1,070 in 2008. The 2009 figures are 140 less than 2007.
India's drop is acute considering that international patent filings dropped 4.5 percent in 2009, and declined in countries like the United States, Germany, Sweden, Canada and Israel by 11.2 to 17.2 percent. The patent application has shown greatest decline in computer, pharmaceuticals and medical technologies.
On the other hand, China showed a 29.7 percent increase in 2009, taking its tally to 7,946 from 6,128 in 2008. This shows the commitment of Chinese companies to technology development in electrical machinery, digital communication, computer technology, medical technology or pharmaceuticals.
