A Pew Internet survey of 900 scientists, business leaders, and technology developers found that most thought that the Internet can improve humanity's overall grasp of knowledge. "Three out of four experts said our use of the Internet enhances and augments human intelligence, and two thirds said use of the Internet has improved reading, writing, and rendering of knowledge," says study co-author Janna Anderson.

Most experts thought that gadgets and applications of the future will be unexpected. "In the future, we will live in a transparent [three-dimensional] mobile media cloud that surrounds us everywhere," predicts Dutch Futurist Marcel Bullinga. "In this cloud, we will use intelligent machines, to whom we delegate both simple and complex tasks."

In the survey, 61 percent of respondents predicted that the Internet will still be free and open in 10 years. However, only 55 percent of those polled thought that most people would be able to remain anonymous on the Internet in 2020.
