New Energy Harvesting Network Means Batteries Not Included
The new Energy Harvesting Network will offer U.K. researchers a resource for energy harvesting (EH) technology. Run by the University of Southampton's School of Electronics and Computer Science, the EH network will give academics, industry, and end users the chance to participate in a discussion on research challenges and collaborative efforts, and to ensure that EH technologies are disseminated to all potential users.
The EH network searches for low-grade ambient energy sources that can be converted into usable electrical energy to power wireless electronic devices. The technology taps environmental vibrations, human motion, thermal gradients, and light. Implantable and wearable medical devices could one day be a beneficiary.
"Batteries have to be recharged or replaced," says Southampton professor Steve Beeby. "Energy harvesting is a potential alternative power supply that will outlast the application."
